The Garlands hires kind, outgoing, and caring personalities, trains for service, and treats their team members as a part of the family. As such, some of The Garlands first dedicated team members remain proud to serve Garlands members today.
Krystyna Weglarz, Hostess/Server/ Cafe Manager
For 20 years, almost since opening day, Krystyna Weglarz has taken great pleasure in serving Garlands members. She says, “It is very fulfilling for me because I love helping people and talking to the members.”
Some of the members sit down to breakfast with Krystyna nearly every morning. “We chat over coffee” she says as she recalls one retired business leader who came to the Café daily, read the paper, and offered her stock tips. “You bet I listened to his advice!”
Another regular, who is a published author and history buff, comes to the Café and shares fun facts about the latest book he’s read. His son pops in for breakfast now and again, telling Krystyna, “Make sure you give dad a banana—he loves bananas!” as he heads out the door, but, of course, Krystyna already knows that.
“We get to know everyone, and it is like an extended family,” says Krystyna whose parents live in Poland. “In a sense, it is like helping my mother—I can’t be there for her, but I can be here for our members.” As such, she is quick to offer a kind word or hug when she sees that a member is having a rough day saying simply, “I’m a very compassionate person.”
In addition to caring for the members, and their families, Krystyna also enjoys her co-workers. “I have a lot of friends here. We have fun in the kitchen, and everyone is just so nice.”
Two decades later Krystyna reports, “It is a very satisfying career.”
